he new West Belleville entry marker signaled the beginning of a series of improvements to the West End and a new chapter in the community's history.

          The new marker welcomes visitors and residents entering the city on West Main Street thanks to a partnership between the West Belleville Promotional Committee and the City of Belleville.  "I believe we all have a vested interest in the progress of West Belleville and our entire community." said Terry Schaefer (co-chair of the committee).  "The beatification that begins with the first project is intended to solidify our westerly border, symbolize the commitment to our city to improve its neighborhoods and project the belief that we have to continue its enhancement and growth".

          A new city streetscape is planned to go along with the new entry marker, transforming the appearance of West Main Street to give it a new parkway look.  The plans call for decorative lighting, new sidewalks and planters down the center of the street.

Originally South St. Louis City natives, Ann and Steve Bachmann saw what West Belleville had to offer.  "When we decided to make the move to Illinois, we searched for about two years - checking out towns such as Edwardsville and O'Fallon.  After seeing what West Belleville had to offer, we decided that we liked the small town feel and its close proximity to St. Louis.  We also like the community support and collaboration of the local schools and churches."
